Hello! I’m Jon Merchant and I’m a Graphic Designer.
I am a highly motivated, versatile artist with a passion for design. I am inspired by classical and modern artists alike, which is obvious from my distinctive designs that combine mixed media, differing visual styles, and atypical ideas. My designs range from the exuberant graphics that emblem Truest Lies Clothing, to professional logos that showcase my clients visions and business objectives. I have experience in collaborating with clients who have a variety of goals from fundraising, to corporate marketing, to independent artists. With my experience I have acquired and honed skills in graphic design to exceed client needs.
Artist Statement
Being a designer does not start and stop with your work. A true designer incorporates art and design into their everyday life, often subconsciously. It is in the way they dress, the interior of their home, and how they solve everyday problems. Simply put, design is in their blood. It is the key building block of who they are. This drive of design becomes apparent in how they communicate with others, how they use their artistic vision, and what art means to them.
I have always been an avid artist with a vivid imagination, often doodling on any paper within arms reach. When I became an adult, I realized that I could use my art and design to express myself, as words and writings can only go so far. When I was younger, I always learned best visually, in turn I believe that the best way to represent myself is through the visual arts. Although at first when you view a logo, poster, or shirt I created it may not seem like anything more at face value, however those works are a snapshot of how I solve design problems. My usage of form, color, images, and typefaces all culminate into one coherent and visually pleasing piece while simultaneously completing and exceeding the goals of the original problem.
Design can only exist alongside collaboration. I believe the success of my art and my designs lies in the hands of others; that my work, regardless of my original intention, should be understood by other individuals with their own understanding and perception. In having this outlook I thrive with collaboration. Getting feedback and criticism from other designers and individuals is what results in the best work— this constant tug and pull of your own vision and the vision of others.
We exist because of design and we design to exist. I feel that creating art is the best way to communicate with others. I use color like words and form as tone; I convey messages through the artwork I produce. Ultimately my passion for design is what drives me to become better, I want to create my best work and I hope to never reach that ceiling. I want to create something that will be remembered by my colleagues, my loved ones, or even someone I will never meet.
At the end of it all I want my work to be a representation of me— of my character, myself, and my life, all visualized through design.
